Western Acupuncture / Dry Needling
You’d be surprised who will benefit from the therapeutic effects of Western Acupuncture.
Also known as Dry Needling clients can find relief when massage or stretching fails to release tight muscles that cause discomfort or pain.
According to Brendan Mayers, while Chinese Acupuncture is based on ancient theories of Qi (energies) running through the body, modern Western Acupuncture is based on current understanding of anatomy and the physiology of pain.
“It is a very effective way to treat pain arising from tight muscles,” Brendan says.
“Problems such as tension headaches, tight neck or shoulders respond positively to this type of acupuncture treatment. It is also very effective in acute pain situations when things are too sore to touch or move – acute low back pain, ankle or knee sprains.”
The process involves single-use fine gauge needles to stimulate the relaxation of the muscles, targeting the ‘trigger points’ that release muscle tension and provide relief both at the treatment site and in regions away from the problem area that are supplied by the same nerve distribution.
If you are concerned about the idea of needles Brendan can reassure you that in most situations you won’t even know that the needle has been inserted.
The technique is far less uncomfortable than a firm massage. It’s more precise in achieving the release of muscle fibres than physical pressure is,” he says.
